Allison Gildersleeve, “The Here and Then”

Umeå, 28.3–8.5  2009

When Astrid Sylwan went on a grant trip to New York during the spring of 2008, she was introduced in a circle of women painters who met regularly in their studios to talk about their work and give each other criticism. One of these painters was a woman of the same age as Astrid, with whom Astrid felt she had a lot in common; Allison Gildersleeve, born 1970.

When Astrid came home she gave us a Gildersleeve catalogue and recommended us to contact this American artist colleague, who had fascinated and inspired her so. Eventually we did so. Stefan visited Allison’s studio in Brooklyn last December. As a result, we are now very pleased to present two parallel exhibitions, opening in Umeå on 28 March and in Stockholm on 2 April.
