The four elemental forces which rule Antony Gormley’s artistic philosophy are Body, Mass, Balance and Movement. The combinations of these factors constitute the unique level of harmonious gravitation constantly communicated by his sculptures and installation work. Here, the pure and minimal form is more powerful than ever. This is an artist, great in every sense of the word. Not only has he received the Turner Prize, become a Trustee of the British Museum and Royal Academician, this British sculptor, born in 1950, has set a solid footprint even beyond the art world itself. Perhaps, Gormley’s earlier studies in archaeology, anthropology and art history contributes to his skillful understanding and mastering of expressing the fundamental conditions of man. In his own words: “I want to start where language ends”.
