Lars Nilsson, “Pareidoli i sotmolnens tid”

Galleri Andersson/Sandström is pleased to present its third exhibition with artist Lars Nilsson.
With Pareidoli i sotmolnens tid Nilsson returns to painting after three decades of almost exclusively working with installation, photography, film, and sculpture. This is manifested in a pareidological approach, a homage to the purely visual narrative. A romantic monochrome painting whose relatively modest measures in a raw umbra in different values provoke the supreme modernistic expectations on sensation and the break with a kind of artistic liturgy. With its modest shifting and with a known idiom creating new, the spectator becomes cocreator in a play with time and space. The spectator gets encourage to recognize the unseen yet familiar, as interpreting the changing figurations of the clouds.
“The drought and the fires around the globe during the summer of 2018 and in Australia in 2019 could represent the precursor of the apocalypse, something that called the design beyond a common pictorial representation. Nilsson let the colour syringe draw the stains of an almost indexical connection to the soot flakes of the fires. So evoked the pumice rain over Pompeii to the climate crisis extreme weather that we are experiencing. In the shadows we try to understand the global impact of this epidemic that we couldn’t even imagine as late as in March this year.” -Lars Nilsson, 2020
Lars Nilsson, born 1956, lives and works in Stockholm. Among the more extensive solo exhibitions, we find venues such as Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen. Exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, PS1 Museum in New York, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and biennials in Venice, Moscow and Seville are also worth mentioning. Lars Nilsson worked as an arts professor, positioned at the Malmö Art Academy during the years 1995 – 2006. In 2003 he was awarded with Moderna Museets Sculpture prize.
