Galleri Andersson/Sandström is proud to present a solo exhibition of the Spanish Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa. Three sculptures will be accompanied by two of brand new drawings (all 2015).
In the two stainless steel sculptures Sappho IV (2014) and Roots (study) (2015), the letters are used as building blocks in the creation of a seated human figure. The works indicates the inherent power and weakness of letters. Alone they mean nothing but together as a text it is one of man’s most powerful tools. The visitors will also encounter the sculpture Rui Rui’s Dream (2014), a female head on just over 2 meters high which have been characterized, like many of Plensa’s works, by a sort of inner light and lightness, despite the fact that they are made out of a completely solid material; bronze. By interacting with the sculpture, one can experience a sensation of trompe l’oeil, where the freestanding 3D sculpture from certain viewpoints seem both two dimensional and floating at the same time. The same fascination for perspective will be demonstrated in the drawings which also study the face of young females.
