Tatjana Valsang, “Sandbank”

Stockholm, 25.2–2.4  2016

Galleri Andersson/Sandström is pleased to present Sandbank, Tatjana Valsang’s first solo exhibition in Stockholm. In conjunction with the European Capital of Culture in Umeå in 2014, Valsang made an acclaimed exhibition at the Umeå gallery. Shortly thereafter, Galleri Andersson/Sandström has shown her paintings in Istanbul, Miami and at the Market Art Fair in Stockholm. Valsang’s abstract paintings on large canvases are characterized by a complex interplay of color, form and composition. The dynamics and the easy touch in the brushstrokes convey a sense of weightlessness and light.

After completing her studies at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Valsang focused for a period of time on work in her studio. The meeting with the audience was not significant for her at that point in time, but rather the exploration of materials and the quest to find her own artistic language was her driving force.

“Paint is for me not only important as colour but also as a substance. It gives me the possibility to use natural laws and universal principles that determine my colours, forms, structures and compositions.” – Tatjana Valsang

It is a powerful and yet feathery, playful and at the same time mature painting that Valsang over time has built up, which now is presented in a number of large paintings at the gallery. Through her commitment and the desire for new discoveries within her oeuvres, Valsang has learned to master what at first glance may seem random, but in fact is very carefully arranged.

Tatjana Valsang (born 1963 in St. Tönis, Germany) lives and works in Wuppertal, Germany and also has a studio at Tjörn in Sweden. Since 2010, she is represented by Konrad Fischer Galerie (Düsseldorf and Berlin). Valsang had her major break in 2013 with an acclaimed solo exhibition at the Von der Heydt Kunsthalle in Wuppertal.
